The Orange Tylomelania, also known as the Poso Snail or Rock Snail, is a true eye-catching species due to its unique screw-shaped shell and striking bright yellow to orange body. The shell can grow up to 6 cm in length, with dark brown to almost black coloring that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant body. This snail originates from Lake Poso in Sulawesi, where it is typically found on hard substrates, although it can also be found on mud.

Description:

The Orange Tylomelania is a peaceful species that is well-suited for community tanks with other peaceful snails, fish, and shrimp. It plays an important role in maintaining water quality by feeding on algae and biofilms, but it also enjoys eating vegetables, food tablets, and flake food. A brown autumn leaf should always be present in the aquarium to support its diet and provide additional hiding spaces.

Ideal Tank Setup:

Orange Tylomelania prefers hard surfaces like stones, and it thrives in aquariums with such substrates. While it tolerates a wide range of water conditions, the pH should be above 7.5, and it thrives in medium to hard water. The snails have a hard time moving on gravel, so hard substrates are the best environment for them. They generally do not pose a threat to healthy plants.

Breeding:

Breeding the Orange Tylomelania is straightforward. When provided with the right water parameters and proper nutrition, these snails breed easily. Unlike other snails, the Orange Tylomelania is sexually differentiated, meaning you need both males and females for reproduction. Since the sexes are indistinguishable in live specimens, we recommend keeping at least five snails to increase the likelihood of having both genders in your tank. Uniquely, the Orange Tylomelania does not lay eggs but instead releases one small juvenile snail every few weeks, making it a live-bearing species.

AquaBreedingSkill Recommendations:

  • Food: For optimal feeding, we recommend NatureHolic Snail Feed Power Paste, which is well-accepted by all algae-eating snails, including delicate wild-caught species like racing snails or staghorn snails, which may not readily consume conventional food.
  • Planting: For a healthy, snail-free environment, use NatureHolic InVitros for your aquarium plants. They are free of snails, planarians, algae spores, bacteria, and fungi.
  • Water Care: To ensure the best conditions for your snails and other tank inhabitants, we recommend NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid for all-around protection, promoting optimal breeding and healthy tank environments.
  • Preventing Escape: To prevent your snails from escaping, use NatureHolic Snail Barrier, an invisible barrier that helps keep them safely inside your aquarium.
